Senior Elections Programme

Learn about the formation of Parliament and Government in our new Elections Programme!

This programme features an interactive introduction to MMP, voting, and representation in New Zealand. This programme runs for 90 minutes and has been designed for learners in year 11 and above.

The Elections programme starts in the Beehive Theatrette with a mock campaign and an introduction to party and electorate votes, before heading to our Education Centre to discuss how votes inform the creation of Parliament and Government. The group will then visit the debating chamber to see where it all happens before wrapping up with a visit from your local MP (depending on availability), or a trip to one of Parliament's themed Select Committee rooms.

Learning objectives

By the end of this programme students will be able to: 

• describe how to cast a vote
• explain how votes affect the makeup of Parliament
• discuss how MMP works
• describe the differences between Māori and General Electorates

How long is the programme and when is it available?

This is a 90-minute programme. Due to room availability, all sessions will need to start on the hour and will not be available when the House is sitting. 

Bookings can be made during term time whether it is an election year or otherwise.
